Beyond agile: self-management - Change how the world works #2
"Organizations with slack are faster than organizations where the goal is to keep people busy all the time."
“People are perfectly capable to make important decisions about their own life, why wouldn’t people be able to make decisions about how they work?“
In this episode we talk about agile, leadership and whether we need managers at all.
Inspiring LinkedIn update
"For the last 2 weeks we have given total control to our engineers to make their own decisions on how to organize themselves as well as what to work on. The only request was that they would try to improve one of our key business performance indicators. The results were amazing... Both the team as well as management were really excited about the opportunity of self organizing teams that combine business experience with data analysis and engineering power." - CIO Travelstart
Articles: self-management beyond agile
After I visited Spotify, Airbnb, LinkedIn and Facebook in 2015, I wrote this article on the real DNA of agile organizations.
"While Scrum did manage to rein in impulsive managers, it ended up being used more to exert tighter control over engineers' work."
Christiaan Verwijs shares his view on self-organizing teams and its importance to Scrum in this great article.
"A revolution is afoot. All around the world, insurgent organizations are rising up and insisting on doing things a new way. This new way of working enables the organizations that embrace it to succeed."
Is self-management only for the privileged few? Can self-management be taught?
Upcoming events: lessons from Formula 1
Earlier this year we visited the Red Bull Racing factory together with a group of CIO’s, by invitation of AT&T. I researched how Formula 1 teams are organized and discovered that they are very agile organizations. They innovate rapidly and are adaptable to change in a regulated environment. Last week I shared my lessons and insights at Ctree Inspire in the beautiful castle of Nyenrode Business University. If you've missed it, there is another opportunity in september at Agile Amsterdam 2017.
